How to Pack: Sending Paint Tins by Courier

Sending paint tins by courier can be very tricky and if it goes wrong will make a very big mess. Couriers often refuse to deliver tins of paint unless they have be packed using a tried and tested method.

Here's a step by step guide on how to pack paint tins for courier:

  1. First step is to secure the lid. Use some strong tape to tape the lid closed, this ensures the lid won't pop out if it gets dropped.
  2. Then you need to waterproof. This is a just in case step, paint leaking out of a box makes and awful mess. Take your tin of paint and put it into a plastic bag, preferably one with a waterproof gripseal, if not fold the top over multiple times and secure with some tape.
  3. Next make up a strong box. The size of the box will depend on the size of the paint tin and needs at least 50mm of space all around the paint tin. If you are using our paint tin fittings then the box provided will fit our inserts snugly.
  4. Pad out the bottom of the box. Use a thick wad of bubble wrap or one of our pulp paint tin fittings to make a cushion in the bottom of the box. When done place your paint tin on the pad or fitting.
  5. Pad out the sides around the paint tin. Padding out the sides is important to keep the paint tin from moving. Really pack in the padding tightly. You can use bubble wrap or voidfill for this. If you are using our paint tin fittings you can skip this step as they hold the tin tightly.
  6. Pad out the top of the box. Use another thick wad of bubble wrap or another of our paint tin fittings to protect the top of the paint tin. Make sure it fills the box right to the top, any space will let the paint tin move around.
  7. Tape the box closed. Use strong export tape to secure the box well, you don't want that box coming open!
  8. Finally use 'this way up' stickers on the outside of the box to ensure the box is kept upright.

Is This Packaging Accepted by UK Couriers?

Our paint tin packaging is UN1263 approved and drop test certified, making it accepted by most major UK courier providers including DPD, DHL, Evri, Parcelforce, and UPS for sending tins of paint by courier. Always check your specific courier's dangerous goods policy before shipping — courier acceptance policies for paint vary and some couriers require additional documentation for larger quantities. Call 02476 611234 if you need advice on courier compliance for sending paint.

Sending Paint by Courier — Dangerous Goods Note

Tins of paint are classified as UN1263 (flammable liquid) under dangerous goods regulations. Most standard courier services will accept small quantities of paint in UN approved packaging for domestic UK shipments — but restrictions apply to quantity, packaging type, and the specific paint formulation. Water-based and low-VOC paints are generally easier to ship than oil-based or solvent-based paints. Always declare paint correctly when booking your courier shipment and check your courier's dangerous goods terms before shipping.
